The Rajasthan state is mostly known for its splendid palaces and forts. Nevertheless, there are many lakes and rivers that make their presence felt between the travelers because of their immaculate beauty, opportunity to have water sports and also for many other useful purposes. Some of the lakes Rajasthan are natural gifts while others are result of efforts of man.
Here are some of the major lakes of Rajasthan: 

ANA SAGAR LAKE
This lake is man-made and is located at the north of Ajmer City. This gorgeous lake was built in the 12th century AD by constructing a dam across the Luni River. The lake is named after a ruler Anaji Chauhan who constructed the Ana Sagar Lake during 1135 AD–1150 AD.

KAILANA LAKE
The pretty lake of Kailana is 11 kms away from Jaisalmer, It is famous for its calm water and charming surroundings. Being a non-natural lake, it serves as a tranquil picnic place with its wonderful sunsets and atypical serenity and peacefulness.

FATEH SAGAR LAKE
The appealing Fateh Sagar Lake of Udaipur city is sited at the north of Lake Pichola and was initially built in the year 1678 by Maharana Jai Singh. The lake is surrounded by holls on its three sides and Pratap Memorial on the fourth side. With its surroundings it presents enchanting scenery. The lake is named after Maharana Fateh Singh who reconstructed the dam which was destroyed by heavy rains. The lake is now the second major source of drinking water of the city.

BALSAMAND LAKE
The Balsamand Lake is situated at 5 km away from Jodhpur on the Jodhpur-Mandore Road. It was built by Balak Rao Parihar in 1159 AD and is an artificial lake. The purpose was to supply water to Mandore as it was built as a water basin. The lake of Balsamand is 1 km long, 50 meters broad and 15 meters deep. The lake is bounded by verdant green gardens that abode groves of trees like guava, mango, plum pomegranate and mango. It also houses many animals and birds like jackal and peacock.

PUSHKAR LAKE
Pushkar Lake is located in the divine city of Pushkar . It is a holy spot, which is considered as old as the creation and has been a place of pilgrimage for the Hindus since ages. The lake is bounded by 52 bathing ghats, Disciples multitude in large numbers to take a dip during the Kartik month (October / November).

LAKE PICHOLA
The lake is situated in the city of Udaipur. The lake is named after a nearby village called ‘Pichola’. It is an artificial fresh water lake and was built in the year 1362.
Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir are the two islands which are within the boundries of the Pichola Lake. It also has a masonry dam called as the Badipol which is 4 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide. 13.08 is the volume of water of this lake.
